The first passenger building at Bellegarde station was opened in 1858 to provide a stop on the line from Lyon to Geneva.
However, a fire destroyed the wooden building and a new one was rebuilt in 1907. Over the years, other lines were added—notably the TGV line in 1981, connecting Paris to Geneva—increased the station’s importance.
In 2010, major restructuring brought it from a simple railway station to the major multimodal hub that it is today. At the same time, the Haut Bugey line was modernised and electrified, reducing the journey time between Paris and Geneva by around twenty minutes.

Created in 2006 by the Italian cartoonist Ciro Tota, the fresco representing Bellegarde Station celebrates the 10th anniversary of the comic strip festival in the Ain region. In the foreground, the historic station and above it a futuristic view of what urban transport will be tomorrow. It can be seen at the corner of Paul Painlevé and Lamartine streets.
There are a total of six frescoes on the city's walls. Don’t miss them during your next trip to Valserhône.
