The fortress of the Counts of Geneva stands on a block of rock (or roche in French) and dominates the banks of the Foron River, which probably explains the origin of the town's name. The summit is reached after passing through the teachers’ and Capuchins’ caves and visiting the archers' room. The belvedere offers a splendid panorama of Lake Geneva, the Swiss Jura Mountains, the nearby mountains, and of course the medieval city. Climb to the top of the tower built in the 13th century and perched on its enormous block of rock... Admire a grandiose panorama of mountains and valleys that will no longer hold any secrets for you thanks to two panoramic orientation tables.

Opening times and fees: July and August every day from 10.00 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 18.45 - September weekends from 14.00 to 18.00 - Adults 2 € - Children (6 to 16 years old) 1 €

This place is 5 minutes walk from the station.

Did you know ?

Situated on a rocky promontory, the town of La Roche was a strategic defensive point and the Counts of Geneva made it their capital from the 11th century onwards, for two centuries. The present circular keep was built in the mid-13th century on a huge boulder.

At the end of the 16th century, the castle was no longer inhabited and was used as a prison. It gradually fell apart. In the following centuries, the keep was saved thanks to the work of Capuchin monks. It has been classified as a Historical Monument since 1944.
